Free Pick of the Day

Tennessee woke up late and won 30-27 in OT, as LSU ("America's Team") blew a 21-0 halftime lead. Denver made short work of Kansas City in the NFL, jumping out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter of its 30-10 win. Scoring was way up in the NFL this past weekend, as the 14 games averaged 45.4 PPG, after averages of 38.4 (Week 1) and 35.3 (Week 2). 'Under' bettors got the 'cash' in 22 of the season's first 32 games but in Week 3, 'over' bettors won NINE of the 14 games. Finally, some pointspreads came into play in Week 3. Over the first two weeks, only Washington (Week 1) and Indianapolis (Week 2) won but failed to cover (Denver 'pushed' versus San Diego in Week 2). However, FIVE SU winners failed to 'cover' on Sunday. Starting from the top of the schedule (shameless plug!), the SU winners that lost ATS were St. Louis, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Tampa Bay and Dallas.

It's Elimination Week in MLB, as for the next three days the Giants play at the Padres in the NL West and the Angels at the A's in the AL West. The Giants won last night 4-3 and now trail the Padres by just three games with six games to go. In the West, the Angels beat the A's 4-3 last night and have all but wrapped up the division, leading by five games with six left.

Friday, attention will turn to the cities of Boston and Cleveland. The Yankees and Red Sox will square off in a three-game series at Fenway Park, while the White Sox will visit Jacobs Field for three games with Indians.

Sports Picks of the Day

The Big-10 took a "big hit" over the weekend, as three of its teams, No. 3 Michigan, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 8 Iowa all lost on Saturday.

Michigan was beaten at home by No. 20 Notre Dame, Ohio State at home by No. 2 Texas and Iowa on the road by unranked Iowa State. It marked the first time all three schools had lost on the same Saturday since 1988! All but Ohio State (at No. 9), dropped out of the AP's latest top-10. USC didn't play but remains the nation's No. 1-ranked team for a record-tying 21st consecutive poll (Miami-Fla was No. 1 for 21 straight weeks in the 2001-02 seasons).Week 1 of the NFL reminded us all the Pete Rozelle's dream of parity is alive and well. SF, which did not win a game in regulation during the 2004 season (won twice in OT), beat St. Louis 28-25 despite having no player rush for more than 22 yards plus didn't score in the game's final 25 minutes (had just 12 FDs and 217 yards of total offense).

TB, just 12-20 since its Super Bowl win, won at Minnesota 24-13 forcing Daunte Culpepper into five turnovers and Detroit beat GB 17-23. The Packers had won eight of their last nine against the Lions and were held without a TD for the first time since 1992. The Dolphins, off a 4-12 season, crushed the Broncos in Miami 34-10 and the "feel-good" story of the week was delivered by the New Orleans Saints. The team without a home, won 23-20 at Carolina (SI's pick to win it all, so the jinx is alive and well), when John Carney kicked a game-winning FG with three seconds left.

Heres my free pick of the day
Event: Los Angeles Angels vs Seattle Mariners on 09/12/2005 at 19:05

Anaheim is heating up having won eight of their last eleven, four straight, and traveling to a venue where they are 6-0 this year. Perfect situation for Halo starter Ervin Santana who always seems to follow up bad start with a gem. Santana has allowed five earned runs or more in six of his eighteen starts. He was ripped by Boston in his last. In the start after his first five "bad" outings, he's 5-0 with a 1.42 ERA and avgd. 7 2/3s innings in those starts. If he continues this form he should be lights out tonight. Joel Pineiro has b2b quality starts but owns 5.43 ERA at Safeco Field and 5.15 ERA LT vs. Angels. Anaheim is 17-9 at Seattle over L3 yrs, and as previously mentioned, 6-0 this year.

Take Anaheim.

MATTY'S WEDDING PICS

CONGRADULATIONS TO MATTY SANDAU. HERE ARE SOME PICS OF HIS WEDDING

Free Pick of the Day

Event:
Colorado Rockies vs San Diego Padres on 09/08/2005 at 19:05

Condition:

Colorado Rockies (+140 underdog)

Take Byung-Hyun Kim at 10:05 ET. Until last night's loss, the Rockies had been playing well. Not to say that one night's going to make much difference (it won't), but they are playing much better than earlier in the season. B.K. Kim has been pitching out of his mind, with an ERA under 1 in his last three games; the Rockies have won all three. He goes against Brian Lawrence, who has struggled for the Pads, going 2-10 in the second half and 3-9 at home. Lawrence has an ERA over six in his last three games and his ERA at home is almost five. He lost to Kim at home on August 27 and this one's a repeat. Take the Rockies.

Abaondoned Dog

Aug 23 2005

Recently, Tuesday the 16thto be exact, a customer at a local lounge where my wife works came in with a small dog that had been discarded from a car near the highway overpass. The car came to a stop and the dog was tossed out. The good Samaritan that saw it, stopped and called the dog over. This friendly little dog, a shih tzu, was a little dirty and obviously not well cared for. The coward who left him went on his way.At first I thought, why would somebody do such a cowardly and cruel act? But now I feel that maybe it was a stolen car or some kind of circumstance that is attached to the ditching of Finnegan (the name my two boys gave him). The well-mannered dog is doing well in his new home. If perhaps thatthe car that discarded Finnegan was the owner, then the dog is better off anyway and the creep involved will get his. I felt I had to write this in case the owners of the pooch are looking for him. You can judge people sometimes by the way they treat animals. If you saw this incidentthen maybe you should report the make and model of car to the authorities or me, I'd like to talk to the guy.
